Abstract

Patterned ground is a distinct relief form in Antarctica, related to permafrost phenomenon and cycles of freezing and thawing. This relief type is popular in area of high latitude, above 60-700. Typical feature of this relief is a circle or polygon with stones of big size in outside and small pieces of stone and soil in the centre, that created a magic and attractive picture in Antarctica. This paper introduces morphological characteristics and formation mechanism of two types of patterned grounds in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica: polygonal and circle forms of patterned ground in King George Island.
